About
The third release from Grammy-nominated group Stile Antico in the critically acclaimed The Golden Renaissance trilogy, celebrating the 500th anniversary of Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina. Thought to have been born around 3 February 1525, the Italian composer is considered one of the leading musicians of the late 16th century, with long-lasting influence on the development of church and secular music in Europe. The album is based around Palestrina’s famous Missa Papae Marcelli, the mass-setting in which he used a new style of polyphony and in doing so saved church music from being banned by the Catholic Church.
Featuring a selection of motets honouring his time at the Papal Chapel in St Peter's, Rome and links with the church of Santa Maria Maggiore, and including his most well-known motet – Sicut cervus.

March 2025
This year is (probably) the 500th anniversary of Palestrina’s birth and there will doubtless be quite a few recordings of his works in the following months. Few efforts will be better than these extremely nuanced and structurally aware performances by the vocal group Stile Antico.
February 2025
Thanks to their flawless ensemble work, Stile Antico can project whatever they choose, and although their approach to the work is familiar, on their own terms one can hardly imagine it done better.
16th January 2025
No matter how elaborate the counterpoint, there are no hesitations, no rough edges: even if there were, the echoing shroud of the London recording venue’s cathedral-like space (All Hallows Church, Gospel Oak) would lend a helping hand.
The New York Times 18th December 2025
The story about this Mass saving the fate of church music may be apocryphal, but hearing these flawless and affecting performances, you’re almost compelled to believe it.
