It’s all finely handled by Järvi and, if you can overlook the over-bucolic trios, these are performances that bring the music vividly and sensitively to life.

Järvi is now halfway through his ‘London’ journey, and once again these are performances to relish, and to revisit with increasing pleasure.

The novelty of the surprises in the “Surprise” symphony (No 94) may have vanished but Jarvi can still make us laugh and jump at Haydn’s jokes thanks to the conductor and orchestra’s exquisite timing and punchy dynamic contrasts. Symphony No 98 is another highlight, where Haydn’s ebullient teasing of the listener’s expectations comes perfectly matched with the Bremen musicians’ own delight in every instrumental twist and turn.
