July 2024

Some extremely daring speeds guarantee excitement, pushing the technical limits in what are, of course, despite their generic title (Études , or Studies), so much more than technical exercises, yet he also finds great poetry...some of Yunchan Lim’s interpretations may be too subjective for everyone’s taste, yet this is a remarkable feat that demands to be heard.

May 2024

His Chopin is as flexible and feather-light as it is fluent and fiery, as compelling in its sense of structure as in its relishing of detail. The whole experience radiates joyful, youthful exuberance.

Rather than seeking to avoid being compared to those past greats, it’s as if Lim is daring us to do so, and already staking out a place among their number. Flashy as his speeds can be, he’s certainly not short of substance underpinning the style here; his heart and mind are clearly just as much at work as his fingers. This is a début that many more established artists would - and I suspect probably do - envy.

These are thrilling performances of Chopin’s studies, the technique dazzlingly immaculate and the musical impulses propelling it often startlingly original.

17th April 2024

He recorded this recital at 19. It’s easy enough to spot signs of youth (there’s a need for more delicacy, more quietude), but the dazzling impression still remains of a pianist in complete command of his instrument and his technical resources.
