Spotlight on this release

  • Orchestral Works by Dorothy Howell

    8th Mar 2024by Katherine Cooper

Rebecca Miller conducts the BBC Concert Orchestra in world premiere recordings of the Humoresque, The Rock, the Three Divertissements and Koong Shee plus a terrific account of Lamia - the Keats-inspired tone-poem which made the 21-year-old composer an overnight success after its Proms premiere in 1919.

Awards and reviews

April 2024

This Signum recording, to be welcomed with open arms, is a fine advert for Howell’s talents. Under Miller’s direction, the resplendent climaxes and intimate detail in Lamia – luxuriantly recorded by a team led by Mike Hatch and Tom Lewington in St Jude’s, Hampstead – always tell.

8th March 2024

First up is the deliciously quirky Humoresque; suffused with a Franco-Spanish flavour which rather put me in mind of Ibert or Chabrier, it makes for a perfect curtain-raiser...Lamia receives another welcome outing, with Miller’s acute ear for balance and some superb engineering revealing the wealth of detail which caught the ear of Henry Wood, who conducted the premiere and requested exclusive rights on the score for a year afterwards.

14th March 2024

if Lamia is a highlight here, so too are the Three Divertissements, written two decades later: sweet yet never saccharine, they brim with warmth and, in the case of the second, a lightly worn but haunting melancholy...Rebecca Miller conducts buoyant performances that show off Howell’s quicksilver gifts.
