About

"Celebrated as one of the finest Tudor composers, Thomas Weelkes served as organist and choirmaster at Winchester College and Chichester Cathedral and although famed for his madrigals, wrote more Anglican services than any other major composer of the me. Performed by the professional Irish vocal ensemble Resurgam with The English Corne & Sackbut Ensemble, this album celebrates the sacred music from this prolific composer in Weelkes’ 400th anniversary year."

Resurgam demonstrate the power and confidence of their ensemble, with bold lower voices and an attractive treble sheen from the sopranos.

14th January 2024

A belated marking of the 400th anniversary last year of Thomas Weelkes’s death, this fine disc features some splendid singing and playing, nowhere more so than in the sublime Alleluia, I Heard a Voice and the composer’s Evening Service for Trebles. Strongly recommended.

2nd December 2023

Anthems and three versions of the Magnificat and Nunc dimittis are interspersed with pavans and fantasias, played with sombre vigour by the English Cornett & Sackbut Ensemble. Of the anthems, try Alleluia, I Heard a Voice or Hosanna to the Son of David to discover Weelkes’s distinctive brilliance, expertly displayed here.
