About

"Whether it was the characters in his Carnival, Op. 9, the different attributes in his symphonic works, or the heroism of his Konzertstuck for four horns and orchestra, there was always something to feed the moment I was living.

Without even knowing his life, I could undeniably identify with what his music was doing to me."

\u2500 Louis-Philippe Marsolais, about Robert Schumann.

For his latest ATMA Classique recording, horn player Louis-Philippe Marsolais has chosen a selection of chamber music by Clara and Robert Schumann composed for various instruments, some of which have been transcribed for horn. He is joined by pianists Philip Chiu and David Jalbert, and cellists Stephane Tetreault and Cameron Crozman.

"The Op. 70, 73, and 94 presented on this album are integral parts of Robert Schumann's most fertile years" says Marsolais. "The freer forms adopted for these compositions and their less conventional instrumentation led to being categorized as Hausmusik ("domestic music", often intended for amateur musicians), which explains the lack of enthusiasm they initially aroused. They are now recognized as authentic masterpieces and are included in the repertoire of many instruments."

Canada's most active horn soloist, Montreal based Louis-Philippe Marsolais has performed on stages all over the world. He has been principal horn of the Orchestre Metropolitain since 2009 and a frequent player with Les Violons du Roy and the I Musici de Montreal Chamber Orchestra.
