About
Robert Trevino’s first album together the Basque National Orchestra featuring orchestral works by the great French-Basque composer Maurice Ravel (1875–1937) received an excellent response. The programme in this second volume is perhaps more ‘French’ in nature, but the Basque orchestra is giving dazzling performances of these works by their own national composer. While the first album was focused on some of Ravel’s most popular orchestral works, this album includes some rarities, including Ma mère l’Oye (Mother Goose) in its complete ballet version, as well as one world-première recording: Pierre Boulez’s orchestration of Ravel’s World War I era piano work, Frontispice.

[Frontispiece] is two minutes of Ravel at his quirkiest. Pierre Boulez, commissioned to orchestrate it in celebration of the composer’s centenary in 1975, chose to expand it in texture... The result, here recorded for the first time, is understandably more Boulez than Ravel. The players here do valiant work, as they do in the masterpieces, observing the composer’s markings with only a few exceptions.

there [is] something deeply empathetic about the Basque National Orchestra’s pride in and affection for this music. The feeling runs deep – as does Robert Trevino’s stewardship of it – and nowhere more so than in the final pages of the Ma Mère l’Oye ballet, given for once here in its entirety...Excellent disc.

It is the two main works that matter here, and they are given excellent performances. There is very good sound with a wide dynamic range and good balance.
Record Review 12th November 2022
Really luxurious interpretation...Trevino revels in the sensuousness of this music...Some beautiful, sensuous playing...Lots of attention to detail...lovely expansiveness...An extremely fine recording.
