Daniel Tong (piano)

Beethoven: Piano Sonatas, Op. 10
Tong deploys fine virtuosity in catching the lightness and wit of these sonatas, and he stresses Beethoven’s seemingly throw-away attitude to his teeming ideas as they tumble out.

Christmas Issue 2022

November 2022

Best of all is his spacious, operatically informed Largo, one of the strongest period-instrument interpretations of this great movement I’ve heard, if not quite matching the red-blooded gravitas of modern-piano references such as Schnabel, Arrau and Horowitz. All told, a fine release.
