About
Paul Lewis completes his exploration of Schubert’s sonatas, begun almost twenty years ago, with three early masterpieces. The Sonatas D537 and D568 display the daring and freshness of their youthful creator, while with D664, dazzling in its artless charm, he already opens a window towards new musical horizons.

Christmas Issue 2022
Set alongside a Radu Lupu or Maria João Pires, Lewis’s colours are generally more circumscribed, at times ruggedly clangorous...But his intellectual rigour and dramatic fearlessness counterbalance the occasional want of poetry.

I doubt that anyone on the current scene surpasses Lewis, whose Schubert survey, now reaching seven CDs, is indispensable. His masterful handling of Schubert’s idiom in all its emotional depth harks back to classic recordings by Artur Schnabel and Edwin Fischer. The recorded sound for this installment is excellent in its fullness and vividness.
