Antonin Jan Nepomuk Brossmann (1731 - 1798) is yet another Bohemian composer to be discovered through the medium of this recording of his Missa in A and its coupling with his Oratorium Breve.
Like so many composers of his time Brossmann received a religious education, through the order Damasus a Sancto Hieronymo. He became a chorister and later a choir director. A colleague of Karl Ditters von Dittersdorf (1739 - 1799), it is thought that Brossmann composed over a hundred individual pieces in various forms.
Brossmann's Mass in A is in six parts - Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Benedictus and Agnus Dei. The Oratorium Breve is bookended by choral settings followed by a mix of arias and duets. Roman Valek directs the period instrument Czech Ensemble Baroque Orchestra and Czech Ensemble Baroque Choir.
