About
One morning in 1822, Schubert wrote down an enigmatic text in which all his ghosts seem to take shape: wandering, solitude, consolation, disappointed love.
Inspired by this dreamlike narrative, Raphaël Pichon, Pygmalion and Stéphane Degout have devised a vast Romantic fresco, combining resurrection of unknown treasures with rediscovery of established masterpieces.

The album’s concept is certainly provocative. Not everything works. But those who succumb to the free association of a programme inspired by Schubert’s dreamscape should find much to stir and delight.

On paper, this 'vast Romantic fresco' (taking its cue from a disturbed and disturbing note which Schubert penned in 1822) looks like a fanciful collage of oddments. In practice it's mesmerising, with the segue from Liszt's orchestration of Der Doppelgänger into the first movement of the Symphony casting a particularly effective spell. Degout's on top form throughout - especially in the Gothic hunting-aria from Alfonso und Estrella, which wouldn't have sounded out of place on René Jacobs's recent recording of Der Freischütz.
