About
A year before his pinnacle opus, Orpheus and Eurydice, Gluck was already largely renewing another musical genre, the ballet, by adapting in 1761 a play by Molière for the Viennese public: Don Juan. Another ballet, Sémiramis, will follow the following year, these two works innovate in that they offer a coherent narration where all the resources of the orchestra are put at the service of expressiveness. Jordi Savall and the Concert des Nations restore all the colours and remind us that a quarter of a century before that of Mozart, another outstanding personality haunted the stages of Europe with all the evocative power of which music is capable.

March/April 2023
This is brought to life by Jordi Savall and the Concert des Nations with precision, liveliness, and excellent interpretation of the dramatic scores of both works. Here we have a recording that can stand alone without the action ballet in its raw and gripping emotional depictions. This is well worth obtaining as an excellent exemplar of powerful musical force.
September 2022
Savall and Le Concert des Nations are boisterously alert to the drama – even if their realisation of it is in places a touch stodgy and ragged – and they show a good ear for colour in Gluck’s more delectable and sensuous orchestral textures.

The playing throughout is exemplary, delightfully colourful and driven along with a natural bounce. Albums like this may not change the world, but they definitely make life worth living.
