About

Camille Saint-Saëns devoted a large part of his life to wind instruments. Often influenced by Classicism and academic, it nevertheless forms part of a poetic aesthetic line rooted in the Pleiade. He will influence the neo-classics including the “Groupe des Six” and Poulenc in particular, in his works with winds. At the very end of his life, Saint-Saëns established himself as an innovator, and founder of the French School of winds.

Awards and reviews

February 2022

This double disc of Saint-Saëns chamber music is a thorough guide to the composer’s writing for wind instruments. ‘The Swan’ from The Carnival of the Animals played on contrabassoon is stunning – a really enlightening transcription.

January 2022

The performances are impeccable, admirably understated, beautifully focused and balanced, and only showy on the rare occasions when the music really demands it.

17th October 2021

Among a host of small pieces for trombone, horn and cornet, the transcriptions from the Carnival stand out: a gruff double-bassoon Swan, and a more appropriately hefty Elephant for the same instrument…Ideally idiomatic performances.
