Execution is more than capable, with no scrambling in the whirling Allegros of the “Scottish” and “Italian” Symphonies. In the Saltarello finale of the “Italian” one notices how eagerly the players engage in the challenges of Mendelssohn’s writing. Manacorda’s pacing is fast but not breathless. This set turned into one of the most delightful surprises of the year.
