About

Sophie Rosa and Ian Buckle have curated a fascinating recital that partners Montgeroult’s sonata (receiving its world premiere recording) with her duo partner Viotti’s 10th sonata, and the precocious F minor sonata by the 14 year old Felix Mendelssohn.

Their recital concludes with Weber’s short and sparkling 2nd sonata written with gifted amateur musicians in mind.

March 2021

Viotti’s sunny A major sonata gets this thoughtfully-programmed (and beautifully played) recital off to an engaging start, but the real revelation is the Montgeroult, published in 1800: most of the heavy lifting here falls to the pianist rather than the violinist, and Rosa proves an adept, self-effacing accompanist to Buckle’s fireworks in the Scherzo in particular. Weber’s little sonata for amateur musicians makes for a super coda, with plenty of Spanish swagger in the opening movement and some striking low piano writing in the Polonaise-finale.

[Montgeroult’s] A minor Sonata, published in 1800, is no violin showpiece: it’s a piano sonata with an optional violin part...Montgeroult’s lifelong concern was “to make the piano sing”, and there’s a depth of invention that seems ahead of its time...And it holds its own alongside the best-known work here, Mendelssohn’s Sonata Op 4. This, like everything else , is played by Rosa and Buckle with finely judged detail, expansiveness and lots of heart.
