Gompper’s bold orchestral canvases are in an approachable transatlantic modernist style which explores binary opposites of line, timbre, tempo and so on...In the concertos, soloist is pitted against orchestra ‘in an attempt to world-build’ that yields highly listenable results, thanks also to the virtuoso commitment of Timothy Gill (cello) and Volkan Orhon (double bass).

All this music has been recorded in strong, composer-supervised performances. Gompper has been writing impressive music for a long time, but in these three albums, we really get the full sense of this truly excellent composer.

There are otherworldly aspects, of varying sorts, to the three works, best illustrated by the movement titles…[In the Double Bass Concerto] Volkan Orhon is remarkably agile as the soloist on an instrument not normally noted for being nimble…Emmanuel Siffert once again play this tricky and complex music with consummate professionalism and, once more, Naxos’s sound is exemplary.
