About

The violinist Midori has been a celebrated performer for more than 35 years, this recording of Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, complemented by his two Romances for violin and orchestra, marks the composer’s 250th birthday in December 2020. Midori plays with the Lucerne Festival Strings in a recording made in Switzerland shortly after the COVID-19 pandemic had caused the cancellation of a planned concert performance and international tour. “Beethoven guided my colleagues and me,” says Midori, “his work focusing and inspiring us, our concentrations heightened, enveloped together in our musical efforts ... I am reminded that he was a man of strong beliefs … who took firm stands on many major issues of his day … Beethoven's determination still provides a model for humankind.”

Christmas 2020

nothing seems to disturb the silvery poise and subtle expressiveness Midori draws from her 1734 Guarnerius violin...The Festival Strings Lucerne – which, despite its title includes the full complement of winds and timpani – respond with precision and warmth under the direction of their leader Daniel Dodds...Listeners will have their own favourite recording of the concerto from the many dozens of contrasting great performances released over the last century, but this one is highly recommendable.

March/April 2021

Midori displays old-fashioned star quality without pushing herself forward at the expense of musical values. Her effortless performance of the Kreisler cadenza reminded me of her innate talents. I’ll admit to a little surprise at how musically she phrases the cadenza. I didn’t expect such variety and imagination. The Larghetto is sensitively phrased, again with a lovely purity of tone.
