Vocally the most demanding role is that of Richard, whose big aria in Act 2, the most Italianate music in the opera, is sung with splendid assurance by the experienced Reinoud Van Mechelen…The many smaller roles are filled with distinction, while the playing of a large Concert Spirituel under Hervé Niquet bristles with swagger and panache while finding space to relish Grétry’s sometimes piquant orchestration.

An early example of the “rescue opera” genre, anticipating Beethoven’s Fidelio, it’s stylishly sung and robustly played. A DVD of the old-fashioned but charming staging is included.
