Schumann: Piano Quintet, Op. 44 / Piano Quartet, Op. 47
Nils Anders Mortensen, Engegard Quartet (string quartet), Jan Clemens Carlsen, Juliet Jopling, Arvid Engegård
Stirring, nimble performances of two chamber masterpieces. The quartet’s playing is as cool and luminous as the moody cover suggests, achieving a fine blend with the pianist.

About
The combination of piano with string quartet was recognised as a viable ensemble relatively late, no outstanding work of this type appearing until Schumann’s Piano Quintet of 1842.
Subsequent composers - notably Brahms, Dvořák, Franck, Fauré, Elgar and Shostakovich - have added further fine works to the repertoire, some of which, like Schumann’s, are now regarded as classics. On this recording, Norwegian pianist Nils Anders Mortensen, together with the Engegard Quartet, presents us with Schumann’s Piano Quintet Op. 44 and Piano Quartet, Op. 47.

Calmly authoritative, a sobering intellect, Nils Anders Mortensen rises to the challenge of this music, combining drama, momentum and climactic elation with soulful poetry and moments of skittish humour free of artifice. His ear for detail, clarity and open textures is matched by the recording team and the Engegård Quartet
