In its second album for Cedille, Chicago’s Civitas Ensemble partners with Chinese musicians to present works by Chinese and Chinese-American composers including Vivian Fung, Lu Pei, and Chen Yi, plus works Civitas commissioned from Zhou Long and Yao Chen.

In Emanations of Tara, a substantial, rhapsodic work inspired by the composer’s visit to Tibet, Yao Chen gives prominence to the pipa and prayer bowl. The results are subtle and rewardingly unfamiliar.
