About

Entranced from adolescence by previously unheard sounds from the Orient, curious about eastern European folklore, cherishing a Spanish culture partly linked to his personal origins, Ravel never ceased to enrich his writing with repeated encounters with musical otherness.

This programme takes us on a journey that revisits the multiple facets of his universe and its colourful influences. We also discover, however, that to explore the unknown lands of music, Ravel often replaced the pilgrim’s staff with the myriad treasures of his own imagination.

Competition is considerable in this repertoire...Yet the Milsteins convey genuine insight into this music and their disc, with its excellent sound and imaginative annotations, is worth investigating.
