About

Jingshu Zhao, one of a number of outstanding young pianists to emerge from China, was born in 1991 in Wuhan. Her talent first became evident when she started to play the piano at the age of three. She graduated from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, where she studied with Keng Zhou and Baili Fang, and then continued working for her Masters degree at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where she studied with Jon Nakamatsu and Mack McCray, and for her Doctor of Musical Arts degree in piano performance with Joseph Banowetz at the University of North Texas. After winning a number of prizes in national competitions in China in 2010–11, she has since performed extensively in both the People’s Republic of China and United States.

Awards and reviews

October 2019

The music is fun and engaging and Zhao’s terrific playing places it in a fine light.

Jan/Feb 2023

Roelcke plays with great power and tonal depth in Louis Vierne’s imposing “Le glas” (Death knell), and with notable delicacy in Liszt’s “Les cloches de Genève.” Her mastery of both ends of the dynamic spectrum, as mentioned above, also includes every shade in between.

August 2019

These are all first recordings, and should draw in a loyal following. Toccata provides an unequivocally good, strong and clear sound for Jingshu Zhao.

30th June 2019

This initiates Toccata’s endeavour to show there’s more to Czerny than piano studies. His output was varied, and so prolific that it runs to Op 861, including seven symphonies. Of these five fetchingly played items, much the most arresting is the Fantaisie sur des mélodies de Beethoven — Czerny’s teacher.
