Beethovens Op.1 Piano Trios began with two works sure to charm Viennese audiences, but in his Piano Trio Op.1, No.3 in C minor, featured on this album, we begin to hear the radical, uncompromising Beethoven in music of volcanic force, contrasted with a sublime slow movement. The Archduke Trio, Op.97, marked Beethovens final public performance as a pianist, but was also a turning-point in his output, its warm-hued nature combining heavenly serenity with earthy joie de vivre. Articulation is clear and precise, attacks are strong and incisive, and textures ideally combine colorful blending with retention of the instruments’ individual identities.Excellent sound, with spaciousness, realism, color, and detail, rounds out the pleasures of this release. A slightly reverberant acoustic imparts a certain glow to the sound, without impairing clarity. There is a bit of action noise from the piano, but it is not obtrusive. What else can I say? I know of no better recordings than Trio con Brio’s of these wonderful Beethoven works.

The expansive first movement gathers intensity during its development section and puts on the armour of light that would be worn to such revolutionary effect five years later in the First Symphony.
