About
Despite increasing infirmity in his last years, Franz Liszt continued to forge new musical ground. In this wide-ranging selection of dance pieces, the Valses oubliées reveal a compound of wistful nostalgia and advanced harmonies whilst the remarkable Csárdás macabre, a characteristic Hungarian folk-dance, is full of innovative features. The effervescent Mazurka brillante is a very rare example of Liszt making original use of this Polish form, whilst simultaneously transforming it. The Grand Galop cromatique, heard here in two versions, is a bravura encore piece that the young Liszt often played in his virtuoso recitals.

The more I continued listening to this recital, the more I felt that it was one of the finest all-Liszt discs I had heard for a very long time…This is Vol 49 of Naxos’s Liszt Complete Piano Music and must count among the most successful of the series, not merely because of Filipec but because of the felicitous programme…Filipec has three of the most important attributes that make a great pianist: artist, architect and acrobat.
