About
This CD of Mahler's 4th Symphony, Recorded December 28, 1949 in Hilversum, Holland, is one of the rarest Mahler recordings known. It was issued as a set of 6-78rpm discs (11 sides) on the Telefunken label, SK 3863-7. Currently, only one set, held in a Dutch radio library, is known to survive. Conductor Paul van Kempen (1893-1955) was active in Holland and Germany, conducting leading orchestras in both countries. His many recordings are on DG and Philips. This CD of Mahler 4th symphony is his only studio recording of Mahler. Dutch soprano Corry Bijster (1906-1995) had a long and successful carier in opera, particularly in oratorio, and Lieder. Her legacy of recordings includes leading roles in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, Verdi's Requiem, Bach's St. Matthew's Passion, Stravinsky’s Les Noces and Beethoven's 9th Symphony.
