About
Dohnányi’s piano works are representative of the late romantic era, with sets of character pieces reminiscent of Brahms' late piano works.
Sofja Gülbadamova, a prize winner of many international competitions, has been hailed by the press for her poetic interpretations, profound musicality, and an astonishingly varied sound palette. For many years now, she has
been a champion of the music of this unjustly neglected composer.

Awards and reviews
Gülbadamova’s two discs here have completely different venues, recording teams and dates, yet there is a consistency of interpretation. Winterreigen is a sequence of varied Bagatelles, Gülbadamova especially effective in the stormy ‘Um Mitternacht’. Brahmsian echoes in Winterreigen blossom in the Klavierstücke Op 2. Here, despite Gülbadamaova’s enthusiastic reading, she is outclassed in all areas by Roscoe. Gülbadamaova’s Op 41 is gnomically varied, but Dohnányi himself (1946) is more quixotic. The Gavotte and Musette is a good performance, but Roscoe’s is more affectionate and the composer (1956) more impetuous than either. The Humoresques are characterful (a dark Toccata), the Op 11 Rhapsodies stormy. Fascinating.
