The saxophone, with its very characteristic tone, is part of the sound imagery composer Enrique Muñoz retains from his early years at his hometown. The association with festive, luminous, and bright aspects became engraved in the sound image of the instrument. Moreover, the processional function the sax served on many occasions (e.g. at religious processions and weddings), involving spatial movement, was one of the important aspects for the development of a sense of space in the composer's music. Finally, the fusion with or incorporation of other sound sources, especially the bells, has resulted in one of the soundscapes that have been later on developed in the music of the composer. However, despite the presence of the sax in Enrique Muñoz’s life, it was not until well advanced in his career as a composer that he started using the sax in his catalog of compositions. In this sense, the relationship with saxophonist Francisco Martinez, artistic director and member of “Sax Ensemble”, was key in using the saxophone in many of his works. Its tone, along with the symbolic elements mentioned above, are some of the reasons behind the repeated use of this instrument in different instrumental combinations.
