About

Composed during his time at the court of Frederick the Great in Berlin, Bach's sonatas provided the court gamba player with ample opportunities to display both virtuosity and sensitivity. The viola da gamba was going out of fashion when the forward-looking CPE Bach composed these works, however they represent some of the finest and most expressive music in the instrument's repertoire.

Johanna Rose is a German viola da gamba player living in Seville, Spain. She is a member of the group Accademia del Piacere and has played with such esteemed ensembles as La Venexiana, La Grande Chapelle, La Orchesta Barroca de Sevilla, Música Prima, performing in major concert venues all over Europe, South America, EU and Japan.

Javier Núñez, a native of Seville, studied with Davitt Moroney and is professor of keyboard at the Conservatory in Majorca.

Rose’s programme stands out first of all simply for having done its bit to expand what is still a remarkably small back catalogue of existing recordings of these sonatas. But more importantly it stands out for the actual performances…There’s often a wonderful aria-like quality to her slow movements…She’s found her perfect musical partner in Núñez…All in all, a really strong solo debut.
