David was born in Chirk, North Wales. He first studied singing at the age of 16 before joining the Rhos Orpheus Male Choir. He went on to study at the Royal Northern College of Music and in 1998 won the Young Welsh Singer Competition. In 1999 he represented Wales in the Cardiff Singer of the World.
David joined English National Opera as a Principal Baritone in 1998 and has sung over 20 major roles for the company including Lescaut Manon Lescaut, Conte de Luna Il Trovatore, Anckarstroem Un Ballo in Maschera, Marcello La Bohème, Chou En-Lai in Nixon in China and Teddy Foran in the world premiere of The Silver Tassie.
Appearances at Glyndebourne include Escamillo Carmen and Germont La Traviata. In the US he has appeared at The Dallas Opera as Sharpless Madama Butterfly and for Florida Grand Opera as Lescaut in Manon Lescaut. He has also sung the title role in Rigoletto for Opera Africa. David is a regular guest artist at Welsh National Opera where roles include the Father in Hänsel und Gretel, Marcello La Bohème and Belcore L’elisir d’amore.
Highlights of David’s extensive concert career include Messiah at the Royal Festival Hall The Dream of Gerontius with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and at the Welsh Proms in St David’s Hall Cardiff, Fauré’s Requiem with the BBC National Symphony Orchestra of Wales, Carmina Burana with the London Concert Orchestra at the Barbican, with the Hallé and at the National Eisteddfod of Wales, Judas Maccabeus with the London Mozart Players, opera galas at the Barbican, The Bridgewater Hall and Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall and concert performances of Eugene Onegin with the Hallé and Mark Elder and Leonore at the Schlossfestspiele in Ludwigsburg.
