About

George Antheil wrote over 300 musical works in all major genres, including symphonies, chamber works, film music and operas. He was extremely outspoken and articulate, and wrote numerous articles, as well as an autobiography – Bad Boy of Music. His music employed many unusual sound sources and combinations of instruments. In many ways both in musical and technical terms he was far ahead of his time. A quote from his Bad Boy of Music autobiography reads – “As I saw it my Ballet Mécanique (properly played!), was streamlined, glistening, cold, often as musically silent as interplanetary space and also as hot as an electric furnace.”

This recording goes further than any before it in recreating the works original version, not just as performed in 1926 but as shown in the composer's manuscripts...Boston Modern Orchestra Project's performance vindicates Antheil's conception, creating a thrilling wall of sound in unstoppable motion, till it's halted by unexpected silences.
