About

'New South American Discoveries' is a showcase for some of the most brilliant South American composers born post-1950. These composers create their works from a personal perspective bred in the academe, yet without losing unique accents and nuances of the sound world of their native cultures. Maestro Miguel Harth-Bedoya leads the Norwegian Radio Orchestra in a vibrant programme of orchestral music hailing from Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Colombia and Chile. All of the works are recorded here for the first time.

Grammy®-nominated and Emmy Award-winning conductor Miguel Harth-Bedoya is currently Chief Conductor of the Norwegian Radio Orchestra/Oslo and just concluded his 15th season as Music Director of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra. He is also the Founder and Artistic Director of Caminos del Inka, Inc., a non-profit organisation dedicated to performing and promoting the music of the Americas.

Awards and reviews

February 2017

Each [piece] is an orchestral showpiece bursting with colour and drama; together they explore a range of local stories and/or sonorities, from the piquantly suggestive…to the overtly programmatic … Most striking is the flamboyant expressivity that unites the composers, conductor and musicians regardless of national origin.

February 2017

Even if these works are not equally compelling, the performances by Miguel Harth-Bedoya and the Norwegian Radio Orchestra are uniformly excellent. All in all, this disc is a tantalising sampler of contemporary Latin American orchestral music

This is a fabulous compilation, however unlikely the combination may sound. There’s not a dud track here. Miguel Harth-Bedoya’s Norwegian Radio Orchestra play magnificently, delivering eight works from composers hailing from across the sub-continent … We get lashings of percussion and plenty of wit, several of the pieces deploy dizzyingly eclectic techniques … Unexpectedly marvellous, captured in punchy, vivid sound.

The Classical Reviewer 11th December 2016

With top notch performances from Miguel Harth-Bedoya and the Norwegian Radio Orchestra and an excellent recording from the NRK Store Studio, Oslo, Norway this is a highly recommended way to discover some very fine contemporary South American composers.
