About

The vast heritage of Spanish traditional music lies at the heart of Manuel de Falla and Federico García Lorca's works. Both men relied heavily on the great flamenco artists of their day: the 'Canciones españolas antiguas' (Old Spanish songs) were recorded for the first time in 1931 by the dancer and singer Encarnación López, ‘La Argentinita’, accompanied on the piano by Lorca himself. It was the great flamenco singer and dancer Pastora Imperio, daughter of the legendary Rosario ‘La Mejorana’, who suggested to Falla and María Martínez Sierra that they might write the music and libretto, respectively, of 'El amor brujo'.

We experience the same thrilling confrontation with tradition here in these performances by two internationally famous Spanish artists: one a flamenco singer, the other a classical pianist. This album is the result of their first encounter!

November 2016

This fascinating disc finds Javier Perianes and flamenco singer Estrella Morente shedding new light on the influence of Spanish folksong on both Falla’s music and Lorca’s poetry…the Debussian elements, controversial in Falla’s lifetime, are very much to the fore, sharpening the contrast between classical refinement and the earthiness of Morente’s singing…and it’s hard to imagine Lorca’s songs bettered…a remarkable disc, and essential listening

The raw edge and gripping directness of [Morente's] approach are acutely appealing, and Perianes’s accompaniments are brilliantly stylish. He makes the piano suite from Falla’s ballet El amor brujo captivating and invigorating.

18th September 2016

The sensuous, light, almost rasping voice of Estrella Morente gives authentic inflections to these songs...In the notes, Morente describes developing her better-known flamenco voice for “more lyrical singing”. The results are tender and strange.

[these arrangements] were transcribed from [Lorca's] 1931 recording with La Argentinita, a flamenco singer who has inspired Estrella Morente – the singing voice of Penelope Cruz in Pedro Almodóvar’s film Volver – to bring her breathy fluidity to both Lorca and Falla
