About
This month CPO launch a new Khachaturian edition featuring his complete symphonies. Volume 1 focuses on his magnificently dimensioned Symphony No.2, which functions as a heroic, Soviet “War Symphony”. Though the work is first and foremost distinguished by pathos, it nevertheless displays a master’s hand in its rhythmic and tonal design. The symphony owes its popular name, the “Bell Symphony”, to the forceful, dissonant opening measures recurring in some passages of the first movement and at the end of the last movement. The symphony is presented in combination with the three Concert Arias of 1946.

Beermann smooths Khachaturian’s rough edges. The shuddering bell motive at the outset is dark and brooding, but the second movement – a restless danse macabre – is too sedate. The third movement’s funeral march features a Dies irae sweetly intoned by the strings over slinky woodwinds intoning a paraphrase of an Armenian folksong…Julia Bauer manages the Glière-like writing [in the Concert Arias] admirably

A splendid introduction to fine works, not too often played.
