The name of Paul Natorp (1854 – 1924) is first of all that of a philosopher but was also to his contemporaries a fine composer. His rich musical work was unknown in huge parts, although music and composing occupied the scholar’s life.

Rich and various is the artistic bequest of the philosopher – apart from two choral compositions and 100 songs there is a huge amount of chamber music compositions for diverse ensembles. Whilst the piano plays a huge role within the work of Natorp, who was a pianist himself, the adoration of Johannes Brahms can be found within the work presented on this 2CD as well.

Nevertheless they develop a structural strength able to fascinate the listener by itself. The musical works of Paul Natorp are impressive productions by a composing autodidact and of a high artistic level at all. They document his personal artistic confession.
