Norwegian composer Rolf Wallin is among the most exciting contemporary composers in Scandinavia. This special CD + Blu-ray Audio release on Ondine includes world première recordings of three orchestral works by the composer, performed by the Bergen Symphony Orchestra, conducted by the Finnish conductor John Storgårds.

Technically it's a model not just of evocation through restraint and Nordic order…but it's also a piece that manages to plot a firm narrative through sonic tension alone, without recourse to 'show and tell'…Storgårds's very physical readings underline the structural engineering in all the music here and the Bergen Philharmonic revel in Wallin's varied dark colours.

The vivid performances by the Bergen Philharmonic under John Storgårds show how Wallin’s instinctive ear for sonority was already evident in his earliest orchestral piece Id, from 1982, even though many of its musical ideas seem rather routinely rhetorical.
