Brahms's autumnal clarinet works are imbued with passion here. Some tempo decisions are a bit willful, particularly the sleepy Allegro amabile of Sonata No. 2.

About
Three musician friends meet here for a programme devoted to Brahms’s musical testaments. The 20-year-old clarinettistRaphaël Sévère, blessed with a magnificent sonority, and Adam Laloum, whose first disc was dedicated to Brahmsian twilights, together demonstrate that, in the burnished autumnal colours of these sonatas, the composer chose the clarinet to bid a melancholy farewell to the world. Victor Julien-Laferrière joins them for the elegiac Trio Op.114.

there is so much colour and expressiveness in Severe’s playing, and Laloum brings eloquent and purposeful authority to the piano part throughout. In short, this is one of the best modern recordings I’ve come across of these two valedictory masterpieces...This is a lovely recording, and one to which I shall return often.
