Haydn: String Quartets
Modigliani Quartet
The Op 76 quartet is crisp and incisive, but to my ears lacks the essential warmth and joie de vivre that the Modigliani finally achieve in the marvellous Op 77.

About
With 68 works to his credit, Joseph Haydn was not only the founding father the string quartet, but also an undisputed master of the genre. This influence continued through his direct successors, Mozart, Schubert and Beethoven, through the romantic era and into the 20th century via the second Viennese School. Constantly renewed, his music is a constant source of wonder, as evidenced by the three quartets that the Modiglianis have chosen for their second volume on Mirare devoted to Papa Haydn.

Searching, if idiosyncratic Haydn from a polished ensemble.
