About
"Over and above the purely musical aspect that makes Beethoven one of the greatest composers of all time, what stands out for me is the lesson of a moral being: insofar as Beethoven sets himself immensly high standards, immense rigour and courage - in his life, in everything he undertakes, in the authenticity of even the slightest of his artistic gestures - his attitude must rub off on his interpreter. That's why I think that, for me, Beethoven has represented not only one of the most profound lessons in music, but also a lesson in life." Abdel Rahman El Bacha

There is no denying Abdel El Bacha’s qualities as a pianist, and there are things which I enjoyed in this set. The skittish Finale to the Sonata No. 5 for instance is played with great wit and a kind of knowing charm which is quite compelling...I have no doubt he has legions of fans who are keen to get their hands on a copy of this set.

How wonderful to have this reissue of his complete Beethoven sonatas. Here is Beethoven playing that’s anything but idiosyncratic but it’s not bland. It is fascinating to follow El Bacha’s playing with the score: he’s able to observe every single detail, without being pedantic… As a reference version, his outshines more famous names.
