"Out onto the sea!" It is with these words that Max von Schillings began the programmatic introduction to his orchestral fantasy Seemorgen. "Proud power presses on to new goals". This is the same spirit of new beginnings known to us from Richard Strauss’s Don Juan, and it is not without reason that Strauss always firmly supported both fantasies: "An outstanding sense of musical dramaturgy and a sovereign command of the full orchestra make Schillings one of our most remarkable contemporaries!" After all, Die Glockenlieder, op.22, numbers among the most compelling works produced by Schillings in the category of vocal symphonic music.
