The period when the four compositions, collected on this 2 CD set, were written spanned from 1875 to 1891. The mid-seventies saw an important turning point in the composer’s life, a kind of personal reassessment that even led him to destroy some of his own works. Many circumstances contributed to causing Dvorak to shift his focus from the theatrical world, and consequently away from the influence of Smetana, to focus more specifically on chamber music.
