About

In his highly informative notes that place this music within its historical context Andrew Appel, Director of The Four Nations Ensemble, draws a comparison between the famed 18th century novel by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ Les Liaisons Dangereuses and the elaborate yet incisive music of his contemporary Leclair.

Founded in 1986, The Four Nations Ensemble brings together soloists who are leading exponents of period instrument performance to present music from the elegant and sensuous Rococo period.

Andrew Appel’s recent release on Orchid Classics received high praise from the American Record Guide contributor Benjamin Katz, who said he played with “theatrical flair” and his reading attained “the rhetoric of a tragic recitation, frozen in the amber of bar-lines”

Brink plays the two Op. 9 sonatas on the flute, revelling in the elegance and playfulness of the music, if not the demons hidden therein...The ensemble give a polished, affectionate reading of Leclair's Op. 8 Recréation...Wonderful tributes on the 250th anniversary of his death.

These performances brim with terpsichorean bounce. The players understand exactly how to use ornamentation, the solo lines frequently elaborated almost to breaking point without ever becoming wearisome.
