About

On this hybrid SACD the notable Italian pianist Alessandra Ammara performs several of Ravel’s most important piano works, including Miroirs, Gaspard de la Nuit, and the Sonatine.

Alessandra Ammara drew the attention of the musical world at a young age when she won prizes at major international piano competitions such as the “J. Iturbi” in Valencia and the “Van Cliburn” in Fort Worth. She has thrilled audiences as soloist with ensembles such as the Berlin Symphony and Vienna Philharmonic Orchestras, and collaborated with many great interpreters, including Alban Gerhardt, Leonard Elschenbroich, and the Takacs Quartet.

Ammara's discography includes a recording for Canadian label Arktos of Debussy, Scriabin and Chopin, and a contribution to the complete Chopin edition produced by Brilliant Classics. Since 2008 Alessandra has recorded for the German label, Arts. Her first Arts CD, featuring Chopin's Four Ballades and other pieces, was released in autumn 2008, and was followed in 2010 by the world premiere recording of Giacinto Scelsi's Preludes. Her most recent recording, from 2011, featured Robert Schumann’s “Album for Youth” (477568).

Ammara is a distinctive artist with a truly unique view of Maurice Ravel’s piano music, and these interpretations are like no others. She takes big risks, daring ones, and they may occasionally fizzle but they still make this album stand out from the crowd...even where it steps out of orthodoxy, it’s irresistible. She’s a compelling artist with a real, individual voice.
