About
Karg-Elert was by all accounts not a great organist himself but his music demands the greatest virtuosity from a player. Stefan Engels here continues his exploration of the complete organ works with the conclusion of the Chorale-Improvisations which was commenced on Volume 9 – PRCD 1073. Heard here are the gems of New Year, Easter, Various Feast Days, Ascension and Pentecost.
The Walcker Organ on this recording is a contemporary of this music so provides the authentic sounds required by the composer.

[O Durchbrecher aller bande] points to Engels’ mastery of registrations and to his command of the sheer amplitude, but also the occasional introspective cast of the music. The recording has captured all this in great detail but has also allowed the acoustic of St. Georg, Ulm to play its necessary part as the music swells but does not cloud.
