Stone's sturdy baritone and Barlow's bright accompaniment bring out the Debussyian melodic elegance in Quilter's songs, while avoiding the preciosity that sometimes afflicts them.

About

Première recording of the complete songs of Roger Quilter (1877-1953)

The first of four discs that will comprise Quilter’s complete songs, and the only recording of every song by England’s best-loved song composer, performed by English song devotees Mark Stone & Stephen Barlow. The original Sony CD, no longer available, has been rearranged, remastered, and redesigned with full notes and texts.

Features Quilter's settings of Shakespeare, Stevenson and Dowson.

“Stephen Barlow's project to record all of Quilter's songs is a worthy one... this first instalment, sensitively sung by baritone Mark Stone with Barlow accompanying, is a promising start” Guardian

August 2013

Stone's sturdy baritone and Barlow's bright accompaniment bring out the Debussyian melodic elegance in Quilter's songs, while avoiding the preciosity that sometimes afflicts them.

July 2013

Stone could not be more sensitive in his response to the words with his remarkably clear diction, and his accompanist, Stephen Barlow, is comparably understanding...An outstanding disc of English song

14th March 2013

it is all very decorous and gentlemanly. The performance respects that restraint, and never pries too far beneath the immaculate veneers; all perfectly pleasant, but this is music to sample piecemeal rather than in large helpings.
