Their latest Glossa project tackles the dramatic work 'Iphigenia en Tracia' by one of the leading lights of the time, José de Nebra.
Having recently given us the popular musical comedy 'La Tirana contra Mambrú' and Antonio Caldara's royal wedding commemoration, 'Il più bel nome', Moreno now looks to de Nebra who chose one of Euripides’ Iphigenia stories for a mythological zarzuela.
The original score is held deep within the library of the imposing and omnipresent monastery in Glossa’s own home town of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, and what emerges is an elegantly-crafted reflection of the musical currents of the time. As in other countries across Europe, Spain was in thrall to the Italian style, Farinelli being a leading light in Madrid for over 20 years, but de Nebra injects a scheme of recitatives and arias of characteristic Iberian zest into the proceedings, notably with the witty castizo banter between two comic characters. Moreno and his highly-talented instrumental players are joined by engaging Spanish vocal stars including Marta Almajano, María Espada, Raquel Andueza and Marta Infante.

The music is very agreeable, and Italianate in style: secco recitatives (with one accompanied recitative at the end) and da capo arias...There are no weak links among the all-female cast and the orchestra is excellent. A byway rather than a highway, enjoyable and interesting but not, perhaps, essential.
