Havergal Brian: Symphonies Nos. 20 & 25

National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine, Andrew Penny

Nothing here is in the same league as Brian's Gothic Symphony, although the Fantastic Variations offer pleasing charm. Strong, efficient performances.

About

The last instalment in the re-issued series of Havergal Brian’s symphonies.

In contrast to ‘The Gothic’, Symphony No. 20 written in 1962, is compact, thematically sophisticated, and deeply expressive. Symphony No. 25 has beautiful melodies channelled within a wholly logical structure and is one of Brian’s most distinguished late works.

October 2011

Penny produced fine accounts with the Ukrainian National Symphony Orchestra, for whom the idiom was quite alien. Occasionally that shows in the playing but no more of an issue than a British orchestra performing, say, Kalinnikov. The sound is still of high quality and the restoration of these recordings, especially at super-budget price, will be immensely welcome
