About

Two intriguing sonatas form the backbone of this release but the interesting work to discover here is the 7 variations. Composed in 1801 they form the fourth cycle of his chamber variations that were based on themes from Mozart’s opera arias. Ivan Monighetti, described by Penderecki as a ‘phenomenal cellist’ and was Rostropovich’s last student at the Moscow Conservatory.

Ivan Monighetti and Pavel Gililov open this fine release wonderfully characterised and highly engaging performance of the early Bei Mannern Variations. Both players respond with charm and humour to the music's contrasting moods...Monighetti sweeps away any lingering doubts [about the Kreutzer transcription]

March 2011

in its odd way, it is instructive...I would recommend this performance to anyone, cellist or otherwise, who may be curious about Czerny's transcription.
