About
The 17th C Pope Urban VIII (known as Maffeo Barberini) had many interests including music. Under his patronage, there was a great flourishing of the arts in Rome; during this time, Cardinal Francesco founded an academy. The composers featured here were part of this musical culture and include Vitali, Ferrari and Frescobaldi, performed here by internationally acclaimed soprano Suzie LeBlanc.

Her anguished singing of the great lament 'Lasciate Averno' is immensely moving, without compromising vocal purity...All the musicians display the greatest skill and stylistic sensitivity...This is as fine a disc as I have ever reviewed.
