‘Saint Peter’s Tears’ was di Lasso’s last work and consists of 21 pieces for seven voices; 20 spiritual madrigals in Italian and a final motet in Latin, sung a capella. The Studio de Musique, conducted by Christopher Jackson, has enjoyed a reputation of excellence for the inspired interpretations of this repertoire.

Lassus wrings from this darkly redemptive story music of near-miraculous psychological acuity and pathos. Jackson's singers keep the music moving, whilst remaining attentive to the significance of the merest details, and the final motet has an impressive, detached serenity.
