About
These trios, recorded here for the first time on basset-horn, come from the prodigious series that Haydn wrote for Prince Nicolaus Esterházy, an enthusiastic player of the string baryton. In a spirit comparable to that of Mozart's divertimenti for three basset-horns, the warm, mellow sound of these instruments proves the perfect vehicle for revealing Haydn’s extraordinarily imaginative writing, with its alternation between joyful volubility, playfulness, and the poignant, soulful intimacy found in the celestial Adagio of Trio no.123, here played on musical glasses in homage to Mozart's Adagio K617 for that same instrument.
